UVa Library Children's Book Collection

WHERE: Clemons Library
As you exit the elevator or the stairs on the 1st floor, the collection will be on your left. All of these books may be checked out

DESCRIPTION:  The children's book collection has more than 7,500 award winning books of fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, science fiction, board books, fairy tales, picture books and bi-lingual books.


  • Jefferson Madison Regional Library

    The Jefferson Madison Regional Library is a fantastic public library with many locations and a large childrens' book collection.  UVa students, faculty and staff who live in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Louisa, Greene and Nelson counties, can go in person to any of the public libraries in those counties and borrow books. In person registration is required. For details see the Jefferson Madison Regional Library (JMRL) web site. The site also includes a link to the JMRL online catalog.

    Book Awards

    All of the books in the UVa children's book collection are award winning books.  Most people are familiar with the Newbery, Caldecott, and Coretta Scott King book awards, but there are many more.  The awards are not only from the United States, but include international book awards as well.

    Caldecott Medal Winners,
    The Caldecott Medal is awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American Picture Book for Children published in the United States during the preceding year. The library has all the books that won this award. (1938-present)

    Newbery Medal Winners,
    The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year. The library has all the books that won this award. (1938-present)

    Coretta Scott King Medal Winners
    The Coretta Scott King Book Awards annually recognize outstanding books for young adults and children by African American authors and illustrators that reflect the African American experience.  Further, the Award encourages the artistic expression of the black experience via literature and the graphic arts in biographical, social, and historical treatments by African American authors and illustrators.
