Finding reserves

Locate the page for your course by clicking on the "Course Reserves" tab above. Look for your course mnemonic. (what's this?)

Find the call number of the item(s) you need (up to 3) and ask for them at the desk.

There are no open reserves at the Music Library.

What happened to my reserves page?

If you came back to look for a reserve page for a previously taught course:

Reserves pages are archived at the end of every semester. Whether you are a student, teacher, or researcher, you may contact the Music Library staff for access to reserve lists for previously taught courses. Please give us a call at 434 - 243 - 8700, or e-mail musiclib at virginia.edu, and we will work with you to get the content you need.

Reserves at the Music Library

The Music Library collaborates with other branch libraries to offer reserve materials support, both physical and electronic, for all academic courses. All materials are kept behind the circulation desk ("closed reserves"); default circulation time is 2 hours (4 hours for videos and graduate-level books). CDs form the bulk of our reserve circulation. Listening stations allow access to a wide variety of media, and headphones may be used by individuals as well as small groups.

Note on video reserves: Because of limited viewing stations, bear in mind that viewing of extended portions of videos or by large groups may be better suited to the Robertson Media Center. However, individuals and small groups may view videos on our equipment. Videos to be used in class in or near Cabell Hall may also be placed on reserve at our desk.

The Music reserve desk also offers streaming access to audio materials within our collection to electronic course reserve pages within copyright guidelines. The Library delivers them to your UVaCollab site directly.

Please contact Winston Barham, reserves manager, for information or requests at wkb5j at virginia dot edu or 243 - 8700.

About sound effects

The Music Library has one small and one large sound effects library:

CD 2041 / CD 2184 = CBS library (4 discs)

CD 4628 = BBC library (40 discs)

Finding effects in the BBC library

The printed guide is on permanent reserve (CD 4628 guide OVERSIZE). Use the guide at the desk (or check it out) to find the effects you want. The discs are normally not on reserve and may be checked out like any other CD.

Locating in the collection

When you find an effect such as:

Single crash 0'06"........SFX 019. bd 22

ask for CD 4628, vol. 19, track 22.

Note that the Media Center in Clemons Library also has a copy of the BBC library (CD 20024). Information on individual discs at both Music and Clemons is available in the Library catalog.
