Government Information Resources

The University of Virginia Library is a depository library for publications of the United States government.  Thousands of U.S. government publications are available in the Government Information Resouces (GIR) section of Shannon Library, located on the third floor.  Many of these items are searchable in VIRGO, but for assistance in locating older or more obscure documents, please check with a librarian or stop by the GIR section of Shannon Library.

The GIR also maintains collections of Virginia State and local documents, United Nations documents, and various other kinds of documents produced by governmental organizations at all levels.  Check with GIR staff for details.

The link below will take you to the GIR subject guide page, which has more information about how to find government-produced information of all types.  The Science.gov link (also available in Spanish) will take you to the U.S. Government's own web page search engine optimized for science and technology topics.  (Use USA.gov for more general searching.)

The OSTI (Office of Scientific & Technical Information) SciTech Connect link provides access to R&D findings available and useful to Department of Energy (DOE) researchers and the public.

Please see other resources listed on this guide's Technical Reports and Military Information pages for additional govermental and private information resources.
