MUSI 4559: Resounding the Archives

This guide links to resources for researching WWI-era sheet music.

Sheet Music in the Special Collections Library

For this course, you will be selecting sheet music from the World War I era held in our Special Collections Library. Most of our sheet music from this era is part of the Joseph M. Bruccoli Great War Collection. To find individual pieces, search within that collection in VIRGO, the library's catalog.

Tips for using VIRGO to search the Bruccoli Collection:

  • Use the Catalog Advanced screen to search multiple fields.
  • In the author field, put "Bruccoli." Note: he is not the author of the music, but the collection is cataloged with "Joseph M. Bruccoli Great War Collection (University of Virginia)" as the author.
  • Limit format to "Musical Scores" on the left side of the screen.
  • Add keywords to limit your results if you are interested in finding something specific.

Other Sheet Music Collections

Many other libraries have digitized collections of sheet music that may be helpful to browse as you are selecting pieces to digitize and research. They may also be useful as you are working on your papers and want to expand your knowledge of music from this era.
