Research guide for students in Alexandra Kennedy's Spring 2020 ENWR 1510 class.

Library of Congress Call Numbers of Possible Interest

Here are a few general Library of Congress call number areas where you might look for books related to the supernatural in Clemons Library (my description of what they cover is reductive, but they should find some books relevant to these topics in these areas):

BL 100s, 300s, 400s  - Religion/Mythology

GR 300s, 500s, 800s – Folklore/Supernatural Beings/Monsters

BF1472s or PN6071s or PR1309s  – Ghost stories

BF1560s-1580s - Witchcraft

Finding Relevant Books in Virgo

Many books are now in off-site storage at Ivy Stacks, so it still may be useful for you to look up a topic in Virgo – say Supernatural or Mythology or Monsters and find a call number then browse around that.

Some Subject Headings in Virgo that may be useful:

  • Supernatural
  • Myth
  • Mythology
  • Ghosts
  • Ghost Stories
  • Paranormal Fiction
  • Monsters
  • Witchcraft

You can also use the virtual browse feature in Virgo. When you have selected a catalog record in Virgo, you can choose the green “bookshelf” to the right of the call number to look at the virtual bookshelf which will show you all titles around that title, no matter the library location:

Virgo Virtual Book Shelf

If you select any of the other books on the virtual shelf, you will be taken to that catalog record and can find where it is located.
