About This Guide

This guide is intended to make explicit UVa Library's current standards for digitized materials for faculty members who wish to donate digital materials to the Library for inclusion in the permanent digital collections. Inherent or unique characteristics of different source materials that have necessitated different approaches to scanning and conversion requirements for digital projects will be considered on a case-by-case basis, particularly for grant projects with requirements specific to the funding agency.

If you are a faculty member who needs materials digitized for classroom use, please contact our Instructional Scanning Services Unit, which currently delivers pdf for articles and jpeg or tiff images for visual materials, or our Digitization Services Unit, which currently delivers 300 dpi jpeg and tiff images for digitized text pages and 2700 dpi jpeg and tiff images for digitized slides.

If you are a faculty member who is planning a digital research project in the humanities or social sciences, please contact our Scholars Lab.

If you are a faculty member who is planning a digital research project in the sciences, please contact Andrew Sallans, Librarian for Digital Services, Science and Engineering Libraries.

About These Guidelines

These guidelines have been developed to

  1. Increase the interoperability and accessibility of digital collections across UVa through adherence to accepted standards and formats

  2. Ensure a consistent, high level of quality across our digital collections

  3. Decrease the likelihood of rescanning in the future by promoting best practices for conversion of materials into digital format and the longterm preservation of these digital resources.
