Best Bets for Women, Gender, and Sexuality Databases

Not sure where to start for your research project?  These are great databases to get started on a general search for materials about women, gender, and sexuality.

  • Women's Studies International - 1972-present
    From the core disciplines in Women's Studies to the latest scholarship in feminist research, this database supports curriculum development in the areas of sociology, history, political science and economy, public policy, international relations, arts and humanities, business and education. The nearly 800 essential sources in Women's Studies International include: journals, newspapers, newsletters, bulletins, books, book chapters, proceedings, reports, theses, dissertations, NGO studies, websites and web documents and grey literature.
  • Sociological Abstracts (1963-present)
    Best place to start research for Sociology and related social science fields. This is the index to thousands of scholarly journals, dissertations, and books. You will not find the full text of the article here, but look for the Find@UVA link below each citation to locate full-text.
  • Academic Search Complete
    Multidisciplinary database covers all subjects. Many full-text articles. To limit searches to Gender/Sexuality section of this database, click on "Choose Databases by Subject" at top of screen.
  • Communication & Mass Media Complete - 1915-present
    Communication & Mass Media Complete provides coverage of journals in communication, mass media, and other closely-related fields of study. It provides indexing and abstracts for more than 570 journals, and selected coverage of nearly 200 more, for a combined coverage of more than 770 titles. Furthermore, this database includes full text for over 450 journals.
  • Project Muse: Women's Studies, Gender & Sexuality
    Full-text Books and Journals. Once you perform a search, you can limit the results to "Women's Studies, Gender & Sexuality" under the Research Area box on the left.
  • ACRL Women and Gender Studies Section
    From the Association of College and Research Libraries. Links to hundreds of resources. Education, health, history, business, politics, science, culture, art, music, film, international resources and more are covered.
