LibGuide Best Practices at the UVA Library

Left Hand Column

The left hand column is a great place to put content that you want your users to see, but it is important for the U.Va. Guides have a unified look and feel.

We ask that you include on your main Guide page only:

  • the Profile Box
  • the Ask a Librarian chat widget

We encourage you to use this area for rich content on the other pages of your Guide.

You can see an example of a left hand column that follows this standard in the left hand column on this page, or on this Guide's Main Page.

Elements of the Left Hand Column

Profile Box

Your Profile Box should go under the Navigation Menu on the main page of a Guide.

Your Profile Box should:

  • Say Guide Creator at the top
  • Include your Title under your contact information (this can be achieved by putting your title in the first line of your address in your profile)
  • Have a recent picture (if you need a headshot, please contact the UX Team)

Ask a Librarian Widget

Next comes the chat widget! This widget already exists on lots of other Guides, so you can add it from an existing one.
