Image Collections and Databases
Please Note: There are many collections of images all over the web. Museums, universities, historical societys and other institutions host image collections, as do other websites. Proprietary databases may offer higher-resolution images with better information than Google Images or Flickr. Try searching the web to find image collections (and not just single images). For example, a search for "Medieval Image Database" brings up several excellent sources for quality images.
- ARTStor This link opens in a new windowIncludes images of art, architecture, cultural objects, photographs, ephemera, and other items of interest to the arts and humanities. For more information on ARTstor, please see the ARTstor Help tab above.
- American Memory Project This link opens in a new windowPrimary source documents and archives for American history and culture from the Library of Congress. Includes printed text, collections of photographs, and some scanned manuscripts.
- FlickrThis online photo sharing site contains images contributed by users. Images of people, places, architecture, sculpture, landscapes, animals, events, etc. Not all contributors allow their images to be used.
- Flickr CommonsA sub-site of Flickr, the Commons is a collection of images from cultural institutions, including the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, and more. Many of these images are in the public domain. See the "Using and Citing Images" tab for more info.
- LIFE image archiveContains over one million images from the archives of LIFE magazine, many of which never appeared in print. Images date from as early as the 1750s. The archive is hosted by Google.
- Factiva This link opens in a new windowImages of people and events in the news. Run your search, and then click the "Pictures" tab at the top of your results.
- RIBApixImages from the collections of the British Architectural Library at the Royal Institute of British Architects. Covers world architecture of all periods as well as interior design, landscape, topography, planning, construction, and decorative arts.
- AICT: Art Images for College Teaching This link opens in a new windowImages of art and architectural works in the public domain. The images on this site were photographed on location by the author, who consents to their use in any application that is both educational and non-commercial.
- Casselman Archive of Islamic and Mudejar Architecture in SpainContains images of over four thousand color slides and black and white photographs of medieval Spain taken by Eugene Casselman (1912-1996) during his thirty years of travel throughout the Iberian peninsula. Produced by the Universtiy of Wisconsin.
