Scholars' Lab

We focus on experimental scholarship in all disciplines, informed by digital humanities, spatial technologies, scholarly making, and cultural heritage approaches.

Intro

The Scholars' Lab located in Shannon Library is the home of the UVa Geogrphic Information Science (GIS) support group.  We support all UVa affiliates in four basic areas of GIS: software, data, consultations, and education.

Got a spatial question?  First, consult the complete UVA GIS Resources page. Or, ask us! uvagis@virginia.edu

Workshops

UVa Library GIS Workshop Series

The GIS Workshop series is held every Fall and Spring during the semester. Come to one or plan to attend them all! Sessions are one hour and assume participants have no previous experience using GIS.  Sessions will be hands-on with step-by-step tutorials and expert assistance.  All sessions will be taught in the Shannon Electronic Classroom, ALD 421 (adjacent to the Scholars’ Lab) and are free and open to the UVa and larger Charlottesville community.  No registration, just show up!  For dates and class details, see the complete UVA GIS Resources page.

GIS Software

Through licensing provided by ITS, all UVa affiliates have access to Esri Enterprise tools

The GIS group also provides access to other software, including open source, 3D, and remote sensing.

For more information about installation and support for ArcGIS and all other software, please see the UVA GIS Software Resources page.

GIS Data

We maintain large amounts of spatial data and make it available through different mechanisms to help users consume the data.

We work to create aids to help people find, use and obtain data from our collections.  The include our collection of Charlottesville Sanborn Maps and Albemarle historical aerials.  For links to all of our online collections, visit our GIS Data Resources page.

We also help people find data or proxy data.  If you can't find something, let us know!

GIS Consultation Services

The GIS group welcomes consultation with UVa students, faculty and staff as well as community members.  Our work includes long-term grand funded research to answering how-to questions from people using our lab computers.

If you have research questions, need expert partners, or are just simply unsure which button to push, contact us at uvagis@virginia.edu for help.

We strive to be available during business hours (M-F, 9AM to 5PM) for walk in service.  However, email is the preferred method for asking help or setting up appointments.
