Accessing an Article

Subject Guides and Liaisons

Research Databases

As always, online library databases are available for remote research with access to hundreds of thousands of articles. Most of these are accessible by logging in with through NetBadge with your UVA computing ID and password, though you may need to go through a VPN for others (see VPN box on this page). NEVER PAY for any materials or journal articles in a library database. Access to these materials has not changed.

EBooks

The Library does not generally purchase or lend textbooks. However, the Library does have a number of ebooks, and your textbook may be among them. The Library is also working on ways to make additional course materials available to students online.

Physical Items

As of Tuesday September 8,  2020 only Brown Library and Clemons Library are accessible the UVA community. See the Library's COVID-19 page for more details.

Policy changes of note (as of 4/9/2020):

  • The Library is suspending fines for overdue materials. Due dates will be extended to the end of the semester. This is true for library materials and Interlibrary Loan materials.
  • The Library is no longer lending physical materials from our collections or through Interlibrary Loan.

The library is temporarily suspending scanning services in order to balance risk and benefit appropriately as our local situation evolves.  This service is unlikely to resume before the end of the semester.  If you've requested scanning for research purposes, we'll retain those requests for when this service resumes. If you need immediate assistance with your research please contact your subject liaisons.

The stacks will not be available for browsing for the Fall 2020 semester (as of September 3, 2020)

The stacks in all locations will remain closed until the Library no longer needs to restrict occupancy to meet social distancing requirements and we no longer need the HathiTrust ETAS program to provide equitable access to course materials.
If the Library were to open the stacks we would gain more student study space, but access to the ETAS program would be lost, per our contractual agreement with HathiTrust and in line with U.S. copyright law. This access is vital to supporting our faculty, staff and students who need online access to resources. The Library is committed to maintaining the paging services to support the safety and well-being of UVA students, faculty and staff. When occupancy and social distancing restrictions are lifted, paging services will revert to normal stacks access.

Internal note- something about special collections? appointment only?
