These are examples of terms that may be helpful when researching sustainability. As you search, experiment with narrower and broader terms for concepts, and keep your eyes open for new words or phrases that may help you find relevant results.

Cite Your Sources
Search for academic articles
Academic databases contain peer-reviewed articles, scientific papers, reports, and more. These are the most used databases for your field of study.
- Web of Knowledge/Web of Science This link opens in a new windowIncludes Science Citation Index (1970-), Social Sciences Citation Index (1981-), Arts & Humanities Citation Index (1981-), and Emerging Sources Citation Index (2005-present). Daily updates make it a good source for very recent information. Citations include number of times the article has been cited.

Areas covered include materials science, aerospace engineering, civil engineering, biology, aquatic sciences, environmental science, computer science and earth sciences in addition to many more. It fully incorporates ProQuest Natural Science Collection and ProQuest Technology Collection.

- WorldCat.org This link opens in a new windowOnline listing with locations of books, videos, manuscripts, and other materials in thousands of libraries worldwide. Some UVa books are not included. UVa users will see full records and holdings; others will get brief information.
- Google BooksWhen researching lesser-studied topics (small towns, for example), Google Books can help you find books that mention your topic. Google Books searches the full-text of books that Google has scanned. If Google doesn't offer the full text, just plug the title back into VIRGO.
