Research Introduction

With the challenges presented by the Fall 2020 semester and the increased dependence on the UVA Library's online resources, this guide is intended to walk you through the basics of access to our online databases as well as tips and tricks for honing your

Quick Guide

Over the summer, we moved from Virgo 3 to Virgo 4. New academic year, new Virgo**

This has a ton of new capability like materials tabs and the ability to customize your search preferences.

If you find you have any questions about Virgo, feel free to use Ask-A-Librarian for support and help

And if you have feedback, we'd love to hear it! Get in touch with the Virgo Development Team using this form

**If you're reading this and going "I have no idea what Virgo is - I'M DOOMED!" that's okay! Virgo is the name of the UVA Library catalog. It's the giant search bar at the top of the Library's website and keeps track of everything we own in print or have access to online. The whole items of things at least. If you need a book, a journal, newspaper, tv show, whatever - you can always check to see if we already have in the collection with Virgo.

Virgo does have *some* articles but (and some of you have heard me say this BUT YES I'm going to type it out again until I stop finding people that don't know!)

Virgo DOES NOT include all the articles.

It can access any EbscoHost databases so it has access to ~16 of our 600+ databases

BUT BUT BUT

those do not include any of the core Science or core Engineering databases!!!

None of them! NONE!

So if you find that the Virgo articles results aren't useful, or have just gotten really weird, it's not you or your search - it's Virgo! You've likely gotten too science-y or technical and Virgo is trying to help as best it can, poor dear.
