Video and Media Resources

About the Collection

The library holds video materials in direct support of curricular needs across all disciplines represented at the University. We will gladly purchase relevant materials for curricular and research use. Librarian Leigh Rockey is available to consult with faculty and students to help locate appropriate video content for a class or research project, purchase new content, and offer assistance with technical issues.

The Streaming Collection
The library provides access to more than 130,000 licensed streaming titles. Most of these titles are for use by students, faculty, and staff only, usually because of licensing restrictions, and must be viewed via the UVa network. Off Grounds, you may be asked to sign in to Netbadge to go through the proxy server, or you may install UVaAnywhere-Lite VPN or UVa's Virtual Private Network  to facilitate access.

Videos for Course Reserves
The library offers streaming video course reserves. Instructors can request streaming video reserves for courses right from a video (in any format) record in Virgo. There is a Video Reserves Request button if you scroll down an item record’s page—click on it and fill in the resulting form. You need to log in to Virgo to see/use the button. If we don’t have the video you want, you can make a purchase request. Library staff will add the streaming film to your Canvas course site.

Screenings
The library does not arrange or fund one-time film screenings. Screenings of videos outside of class require Public Performance Rights (PPR). Examples include screenings for student organizations, parties, film festivals, etc. While the library does have PPR for many documentary and educational videos (not feature films), terms can differ depending on the video and the distributor, so please check with Leigh Rockey if you have questions. You can purchase PPR for many feature films through Swank Motion Pictures, Inc.
