Resources for Alumni
So you have graduated. Congrats! Unfortunately, that often means losing access to all the awesome library content that UVA has to offer. You can find some good alternatives listed below. Don't forget that alumni (and any non-affiliated community patrons) are always welcome to check out books at UVA Library.
Academic Literature:
- HoosOnline - Online Library for UVA AlumniLifetime Learning provides alumni with free access to a robust online research library featuring six databases with over 10,000 journals and articles, many of which are full-text. These databases are available free of cost to all University of Virginia alumni through your HoosOnline account. Whether you have returned to school, work for a major corporation or stay at home with children, the library databases can be a great intellectual resource. Search the databases to keep you up-to-date on the latest topics, discoveries, business books or wellness information.
- Academic Search: Full text journals, indexing and abstracting
- Business Source: Alumni Edition for post-college professionals
- Book Summaries: Summaries of the top business books
- CINAHL: Nursing and Allied Health
- Health Library: Health, wellness and complementary therapy
- MEDLINE: Medical Database
- Unpaywall and OAButtonUnpaywall and OAButton are two browser extensions that help you find open access (i.e., freely available) versions of articles. You might use this if you come across an article that asks you to pay for access.
Case Law:
- Caselaw Access ProjectThe Caselaw Access Project (“CAP”) expands public access to U.S. law.
Their goal is to make all published U.S. court decisions freely available to the public online, in a consistent format, digitized from the collection of the Harvard Law Library. This is a good source if you are alumni or a community patron of the library, without access to Lexis.
Think Tank/NGO Search:
- Think Tank Search at Harvard Kennedy SchoolVery useful custom search from Harvard. Searches think tank reports on the open web.
Federal Government Information:
- Congress.govBill tracking and links to full text.
- govinfo.govgovinfo provides free public access to official publications from all three branches of the Federal Government.
- CRS ReportsFind Congressional Research Service Reports. These are excellent overviews of topics written by the Library of Congress for Congress.
Citation Manager:
- ZoteroI hope you have been using Zotero all along! Zotero is an excellent, freely available citation manager.
