Core STS Journals

This is a list of core journals for Engineering and Society and STS courses. The links to each journal are provided below. However, if you need to search for another journal title which is not listed, the best website for accessing a journal when you know its name  is Journal Finder.

Technology and Culture, the journal of the history of technology, draws on scholarship in diverse disciplines to publish insightful pieces intended for general readers as well as specialists. Options for accessing articles for the Journal Finder link:

  • Project MUSE takes you straight to the journal and searches articles from 1998 - present.
  • JSTOR searches articles from 1959 - 2007.

Science and Engineering Ethics is a mufti-disciplinary journal that explores ethical issues of direct concern to scientists and engineers. Coverage encompasses professional education, standards, and ethics in research and practice, extending to the effects of innovation on society at large.

  • Multiple option for accessing article are avaialble from the link.
  • Suggestion: Choose the one with the greatest date range to get the most most articles from one click (Springer).

Social Studies of Science, peer-reviewed journal, publishing work from a range of fields including: political science, sociology, economics, history, philosophy, psychology social anthropology, legal and educational disciplines.

You have two options to choose from to access this journal from the link:

  • JSTOR Database which searches articles from 1975-2009.
  • Sage Publications which takes to you straight to the journal and searches articles from 2005-present.

Science, Technology, & Human Values is a peer-reviewed, bi-monthly, international, interdisciplinary journal containing research, analyses and commentary on the development and dynamics of science and technology, including their relationship to politics, society and culture.

You have two options to choose from to access this journal from the link:

  • JSTOR database which searches articles from 1978-2009.
  • Sage Publications which takes you directly to the journal and searches articles from 2005-present.

Bulletin of Science, Technology & Society is a peer-reviewed, bi-monthly journal that provides a means of communication within as wide of a spectrum of the STS community as possible, including faculty and students from sciences, engineering, the humanities, and social science.

There is only one option available for searching the journal on-line.  The Sage Publications link will take you directly to the journal where you can search articles from 2005 to present.  Please note:  the Brown Science & Engineering Library also has print copies of this journal for the years 2002-2004.  They are located on the intermediate floor under the call number Q175.4 B84.

IEEE Technology & Society Magazine is a journal that focuses on the impact of technology on society, the impact of society on the engineering profession, the history of the societal aspects of electrotechnology, and professional, social, and economic responsibility in the practice of engineering  and its related technology.

There are two options for accessing IEEE Tech & Society:

  • In print which can be found at the Brown Science & Engineering Library in Clark Hall under the call number T14.5.I13 on the intermediate floor.  Print journals run from 1982-2002.  Not a full run of the volumes though.
  • On-line via the link above which will take you to IEEE Explore database with the journals starting in 1982.

Isis indexes articles, books, and dissertations in the history of science.  Each issue begins with topical articles providing in-depth coverage of leading issues in the history of science.  Coverage is from 1913-present.

Philosophy of Science is published five times a year and discusses issues in the philosophy of science from diverse standpoints.  The link takes you directly to JSTOR where you can search for articles.

There are multiple options for accessing articles from the link.  I recommend using either Academic Search Complete or JSTOR to conduct your searches.

Nanoethics provides a forum for informed discussion of ethical and social concerns related to nanotechnology, and a counterbalance to fragmented popular discussion.
