  • Search UVA's U.S, Historical Newspapers Database by date, by state, or both, to find newspaper titles (no articles) of newspapers in microfilm held at Alderman Library . Please note: this database is searchable by state and date only, not searchable by title.

  • Factiva (UVA only)
    Full-text, thousands of sources from all over the world, in 22 languages. Coverage varies by title, some back to 1980s. Use for Wall St. Journal back to 1979. NOTE: click on News Pages to browse daily issues of recent newspapers from many countries.
  • LexisNexis Academic (UVA only)
    Full-text of hundreds of U.S. and some foreign newspapers. Coverage varies by title, some back to 1980s. Includes full-text of news program transcripts and university newspapers (including UVA's Cavalier Daily). NOTE: see Federal News Service and the FDCH News Service Capitol Report in Lexis/Nexis.
  • Proquest Historic Newspapers & Magazines (UVA only)
    Searchable facsimiles of historical archives of New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times. Also includes archives of several prominent African-American newspapers: Chicago Defender, Norfolk Journal and Guide, Pittsburgh Courier, Baltimore Afro-American, NY Amsterdam News. Use Advanced Search to search several titles simultaneously.

  • ProQuest Historical Newspapers - Black and Ethnic Newspapers (UVA only)
    A subset of ProQuest Historical Newspapers, this historical archive (back to 19th century in some cases) covers several prominent black newspapers: Chicago Defender, Norfolk Journal and Guide, Pittsburgh Courier, Baltimore Afro-American, and NY Amsterdam News. Also included in this resource is the database Ethnic NewsWatch (approx.1990-present), which includes US African-American and many other ethnic publications. Use Advanced Search to limit search to one or more newspapers or to limit search to Ethnic NewsWatch publications only. See dates of coverage for all publications in this resource, including those in Ethnic NewsWatch.
