Zotero

An overview for installing, setting up, and using the bibliographic manager Zotero. Based on guide created by Jason Puckett and licensed by Georgia State University Library at http://research.library.gsu.edu/c.php?g=115275&p=750658

Advanced PDF management in Zotero for when you hit free storage limits

Zotfile is a Zotero plugin to manage your attachments: automatically rename, move, and attach PDFs (or other files) to Zotero items, sync PDFs from your Zotero library to your (mobile) PDF reader (e.g. an iPad, Android tablet, etc.) and extract annotations from PDF files.

You might want to use ZotFile if you have ever hit the limit on the free Zotero storage.  You can use ZotFile to easily rename and move PDFs; combine it with UVA's Box for unlimited cloud storage.

Adding Notes to Citations

You can attach notes to citations in Zotero.  Select a citation, then select the Notes tab on the right, or click on the sticky note icon, then select "Add Child Note" (pictured below).  Start typing in the notes field.

You can also add a "Standalone Note" if you do not want the note attached to a citation.

Merging Duplicate Records

You can merge records in order to remove duplicate records in Zotero.  Select Duplicate Items on the left, and Zotero will display all the records it thinks are duplicates.  Select the Merge button on the right.

If the versions are slightly different, Zotero will display the differences, and you can select a master item.

Zotero on a mobile device or tablet

If you’re using a mobile device or a desktop browser without a Zotero Connector, you can use the Zotero Bookmarklet to save items to your Zotero library.

The Zotfile plugin allows you to use Zotero on a tablet.

Locate items through Zotero via UVA Library, even off grounds

To set up a link resolver so that you can automatically find an article that you're interested in through the UVA Library system, you'll first need to add our Link Resolver in Zotero.

You do this by going into your "Preferences" in the Zotero App, and selecting the "Advanced" option.

Under the "Advanced" section is an option for Resolver. This is where you'll add the URL for the Link Resolver for your institution.
For UVA, it is: http://re5qy4sb7x.search.serialssolutions.com

Once the Link is saved in your "Preferences", you can select any item in Zotero and select the green "Locate" arrow (on the top, left of the Zotero App). It will feature a new "Library Lookup" option.

Clicking on "Library Lookup" will automatically open a browser window and search the UVA Library system for a link to the item that you'd searched.
