Virgo

An introduction to Virgo, the Library's catalog of resources.

Advanced Search Layout

Virgo's Advanced Search allows you to construct a detailed set of criteria before you begin a search. In addition, you have the option to customize the  search form that will appear when you are signed in.

Filters, on the left side of the screen, can be selected and combined in any number of ways before you click the Search button at the bottom right of the screen.

A default set of four Criteria boxes are to the right of the Filters. These can be changed, added to, or deleted, allowing you to fill in search terms before you click Search.

Criteria dropdown menu items include:

  • Keyword (Includes every field in a record. Does not include any full text searching within items).
  • Identifier (Includes Call Number, ISBN, ISSN, Virgo barcode, accession number, and more).
  • Title
  • Full Text (Searches only UVA-owned collections for which we have full text content. Includes Board of Visitors minutes and E-text Center files).
  • Journal Title
  • Author
  • Subject
  • Date (This can be refined using the dropdown menu within the criteria box).
    • This is the only place in Virgo to search with specific date ranges!
  • Publisher/Place of Publication

Criteria can be linked with Boolean AND, OR, and NOT terms to further expand or limit the final search.
